Accessibility & prescription status

In Luxembourg, LNG EC is available from pharmacies and family planning centers without a prescription. Since February 1, 2015, UPA EC is also available without a prescription from pharmacies and family planning centers.4

EC was provided free of cost in family planning centres, but was not reimbursed by the national health fund (Caisse Nationale De Sante, or CNS).5
In January 2023, the Government announced that all short and long acting reversible contraceptives requiring a medical prescription (and also irreversible contraceptives) are to be fully covered without age-limits as of April 1, 2023. Emergency contraception pills are also to be provided free of cost in any pharmacy.6

The website https://macontraception.lu/la-pilule-durgence/  (in French) and  https://mengverhuetung.lu/notfallverhuetung-mit-der-pille-danach/ (in German) developed by the Centre national de référence pour la promotion de la santé affective et sexuelle (Cesas) and partners, provide general recommendations on how to use EC (and other contraceptives), and where to find it.
