Emergency contraception (EC) has been available in Andorra for over 10 years. Local pharmacies and public health centres distribute LNG and UPA EC pills without prescription since June 2018.

Accessibility & prescription status
In Andorra, from 2008 until 2018, national guidelines for pharmacists established that prescription was mandatory in order to purchase EC pills. But since June 2018 LNG and UPA EC pills are available behind the counter from pharmacies for population over 16. This means that EC is available without a prescription but is not on the shelves and needs to be requested in order to purchase. EC pills are also provided in the hospital emergency room, and in pubic health care centres. Those under 16 still requiere a medical prescription to use EC.2

ECPs are provided free of charge in youth clinics (Consulta Jove dels centres d’atenció primària) and at the Clinic for Comprehensive Women Care (Servei Integral d’Atenció a la Dona, SIAD).3 Both UPA and LNG EC pills are covered by the Andorra Social Security System when procured with a prescription.3

In June 2018, the Ministry of Health reported having updated and disseminated basic directives for EC provision in pharmacies.
