Canada: LNG EC free of cost in British Columbia
April 2023. As of this month, in the Canadian province of British Columbia (BC) some brands of LNG emergency contraception pills (ECPs) are available free of cost directly from pharmacies. This gratuity scheme is run by British Columbia Pharma Care (the publicly funded program thathelps residents pay for eligible prescription drugs, and certain medical supplies and pharmacy services).
A prescription will not be required for gratuity, but an interaction with the pharmacists will be needed (in order to enter the product code in the computer system for it to be free).
In Canada LNG ECPs are available over the counter, but a prescription is still required to obtain UPA ECPs. For the complete list of contraceptives covered and more details about how this gratuity measure will be implemented, visit B.C. Pharma Care website.
