RHSC: Data on public procurement of EC from low- and middle-income countries.
April 2023. In December 2022, the Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition (RHSC) and the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) published The Family Planning Market Report. This report leverages shipment data from 17 participating suppliers to analyze the public-sector contraceptive market in 83 low- and middle-income countries.
The public sector is defined as those purchased by public sector procurers such as ministries of health, government affiliated procurers, social marketing organizations, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
According to the report authors “the procurement trends observed across market value and market volumes for emergency contraceptives (ECs) between 2017-21 are consistent with 5-year trends for the overall public-sector contraceptive market, which experienced a peak in 2020 and a contraction in 2021 primarily due to COVID-19 and funding challenges. EC volumes grew by 12 percent overall between 2017-21, but experienced a 4 percent decline in volumes from 2020 to 2021, falling to around 13 million units in 2021. EC market value grew by 12 percent from 2017-21 but experienced a 7 percent reduction from 2020 to 2021 to land at around $3 million in 2021. In 2021, EC represented 0.6% of the method mix in terms of Couple-Years of Protection (CYP) shipped.”
